5/28/2023 0 Comments Mother Jones by Elliott J. Gorn![]() ![]() ![]() She returned to the states to teach school in Monroe, Michigan. Her family left Ireland for the United States, then went to Canada. In her life time, she would become known to the American Government as the "grandmother of agitators", the "most dangerous woman in America" with a reputation as a fearless fighter for workers rights. She lost her dressmaking business in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Mary Harris Jones was driven from her native Ireland by the potato famine when she was a teenager, then watched her husband and four children die during a yellow fever epidemic just after the Civil War. Rather than give up, she got involved in the labor movement, and late in the 19th century, an old woman, she invented Mother Jones, the fearless organizer of workers everywhere. She came back to Chicago, then was burned out in the Chicago Fire. ![]() In her early 20s, she moved to Memphis, married a union iron-molder named George Jones, had four children, then lost them all in a yellow fever epidemic. She helped coordinate major strikes and co-founded the Industrial Workers of the World.īorn and raised in Cork’s Shandon neighborhood, Mary Harris’ family fled the Great Famine and landed in Toronto Canada in the middle of the 19th century. Harris Jones, known as Mother Jones, was an Irish-born American schoolteacher and dressmaker who became a prominent organized labor representative, community organizer, and activist. ![]() ![]() ![]() It's a tough job-at least, until the swindler is found dead, slain in Meg's booth with one of her own wrought-iron creations. It’s a tale of courage and consequences, and a choice that can never be undone.Ī short story prequel to her multi-starred fantasy, Thorn, Intisar Khanani’s “Brambles” gives Alyrra’s account of what really happened all those years ago, and how a few critical days turned her life into a daily fight for survival. ![]() Yet, the truth hides another story, one of honor and honesty, of a princess gambling her own life for another’s. In the kingdom of Adania, everyone knows what Princess Alyrra did to earn the court’s contempt, her mother’s disdain, and her brother’s hatred. All of you know my big, fangirling love for Intisar Khanani’s books, including her novel “ Thorn” which came out last march (read it! read it! read it!!!).Īnd now “ Brambles“, the prequel novelette, is slated for release on December 7th on eBook and Audio (same voice actor who did Thorn, woo hoo!)!Ĭheck out the gorgeous cover below, another work of art by Jenny Zemanek: ![]() 5/27/2023 0 Comments Going Home by Jon Katz![]() ![]() ![]() What he finds is a community where a rodent problem prompts anyone within earshot at the hardware store to offer advice, and where the digging of a new well draws every neighbor within miles to his front lawn. I went for a lot of different reasons, but mostly, I think, to try to be a better human."Īrmed with the writings of Trappist monk Thomas Merton, his two faithful yellow Labradors, and the desire to confront change rather than simply react to it, Katz departs from his suburban en-clave (where, as a carpooling father, he is known as "The Prince of Rides") and heads to a new world. He writes, "I bought a tiny cabin at the very tip of a mountain in a remote corner of upstate New York and went there by myself. "Any more settling and I would vanish into the mud like some fat old catfish." In Running to the Moun-tain, Katz finds a way to redefine and lend new meaning to his life. Either her family has been very elaborately set-up or her beloved twin is in way over her head. Then Alicia’s dates start getting killed. Ava becomes Alicia much more often and openly enjoys leading boys on with the shtick, but reluctant Stanford hopeful Alexa, our narrator, thinks her stuffy, studious self just couldn’t impress boys the way Alicia does. ![]() They do it for different selfish reasons. What their father doesn’t know is that they’ve also been using her as an alter ego of sorts: Alicia is the wild girl who goes on dates with guys who are certainly not good enough for Ava and Alexa. Since they were young, identical twin sisters Ava and Alexa have jokingly blamed their small misgivings on Alicia, a fictional triplet. We want tension and suspense and nail-biting jitters! Thankfully, CJ Omololu delivers all of the above in her new novel, THE THIRD TWIN! When we want a thriller, we don’t expect our books to pull any punches. ![]() 5/27/2023 0 Comments Happy Deathday to You...and Other Stories to Give You Nightmares by George E. Stanley![]() ![]() This sequel has fewer slasher-movie elements than the original and wanders all over the place, even into bad slapstick. The storytelling is rather scattered, but it's still emotionally centered and quite entertaining for teens and up. There's a reference to a college girl being "wasted" and hung over, but nothing is shown. Language includes a couple uses of "f-k," plus "s-t," "bitch," "ass," and more. ![]() ![]() A naked man wearing a towel is caught in a woman's dorm room (he has a line about a three-way). Women wear cleavage-revealing outfits and skimpy underwear, and college students kiss passionately. Characters are chased and stalked, and there's screaming and struggling. The main character dies via suicide several times with no consequences, as she's always resurrected. Slasher movie-style violence includes killings, stabbing, shooting, and some blood (dribbles and spurts). Parents need to know that Happy Death Day 2U is the horror-comedy sequel to Happy Death Day, about a serial killer and a time loop. ![]() References carried over from first film about Tree being "so wasted" and hung over the morning of her birthday, but nothing is shown.ĭid you know you can flag iffy content? The result is a book whose literary achievement will outlast its timeliness." - Anthony Marra Her portraits of individual Ukrainians and Russians are as rich and nuanced as her synthesis of their national histories and politics. ![]() What makes Black Square superb, to my mind, is Pinkham's keen eye for the dark comedy and tragedy that mark so many of her subjects.
